John Cena's career in WWE is one of the most iconic and influential legacies in the world of professional wrestling. From his early beginnings in the company to his current status as one of the most recognized names in sports entertainment, Cena's impact on WWE has been profound.
His versatility, charisma, work ethic, and commitment to the business have solidified him as a cornerstone of the promotion, with his accomplishments ranging from world titles to charitable endeavors. But beyond his on-screen triumphs, Cena's most notable achievement may be his unprecedented run as WWE's ultimate "face" and the lasting impression he left on the industry as a whole.
Cena made his debut in WWE in 2002, after being signed to the developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). His initial character was a generic "Superman" type, but it was his "Doctor of Thuganomics" persona that caught the attention of fans. Dressed in hip-hop-inspired gear, with a penchant for rapping on the mic, Cena soon became a fan favorite due to his unique mix of humor, charisma, and undeniable talent. His ability to work the mic was unparalleled at the time, making him an instant hit, even if his ring work was still a work in progress.
His first WWE Championship win at WrestleMania 21 solidified his place at the top, and his career trajectory only ascended from there. As Cena's stock rose, WWE began pushing him as the face of the company, with his blend of good looks, family friendly image, and never-say-die attitude appealing to the younger demographic while still maintaining the respect of older fans.
For over a decade, John Cena became synonymous with WWE’s mainstream appeal. His "Never Give Up" slogan and colorful attire made him the ultimate "face" (the good guy) of the company. During this time, Cena was a workhorse, frequently holding the WWE Championship and headlining pay-per-views, including WrestleMania. His mainstream success extended beyond wrestling, with appearances in movies, TV shows, and commercials. Cena was everywhere, becoming an ambassador for WWE and reaching audiences who might never have considered watching professional wrestling.
Cena's appeal was undeniable, but it wasn't just about the titles or the spotlight. It was about his connection with fans. Children adored him, and families looked up to him as a role model, especially due to his philanthropic efforts. His work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, granting over 650 wishes, became one of his most important legacies, earning the Guinness World Records title for most wishes granted through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Cena’s impact on WWE is further magnified by a remarkable Guinness World Records title. He holds the record for the longest WWE Face run before turning heel, a distinction that speaks to the sheer length of his tenure as the company’s go-to good guy. For over a decade, Cena was WWE's figurehead, standing tall as the ultimate face of the promotion.
While many wrestlers have held the top spot for periods of time, none have maintained such a prolonged and consistent run in the role of the All-American, never-back-down hero quite like Cena.
After a war between the remaining competitors, it came down to two. Cena Vs Punk.
The two long-time rivals found themselves face-to-face once again, igniting a roar from the crowd. Cena and Punk traded furious strikes, each man desperate for a ticket to WrestleMania. Punk locked in the Anaconda Vice, but Cena powered out, hoisting Punk on to his shoulders for an Attitude Adjustment. Punk countered mid-air and landed a Go to Sleep out of nowhere, but Cena miraculously kicked out at two.
Punk, frustrated, attempted another GTS, but Cena countered into the STF, cinching it in deep. Punk clawed toward the ropes - only for Cena to pull him back to the centre of the ring, forcing the Second City Saint to tap out at 32:40.
Cena had done it! The arena erupted in cheers as the 16-time world champion secured his path to WrestleMania 41.
Cody Rhodes, The American Nightmare’s music ran throughout the arena, the title holder coming down the ramp to greet the victor and his eventual challenger. Mutual respect and jubilation were in the air.
The Rock’s familiar theme swept through the arena. The Rock had made Rhodes an offer to make his dreams come true, in return for his soul. It was now time for The Rock to his receive his answer.
